What a Doula Does Not Do

  • Perform any medical exam or give any medical advice - I can provide you with evidence-based medicine articles, explain procedures, provide you with benefits/risks of medications, and help you to ask the right questions.
  • Make any decisions for the mother or the family - I am there to support you in the decisions you make
  • Be an advocate for you to the medical staff - I can cheer you along and support you no matter what, but you are your own advocate and the advocate for your child.
  • Deliver the baby - I do not deliver babies and will not attend an unassisted birth.
  • Take over the job of the father - I am there to support him, remind him of what he may have forgotten in the childbirth class, and to help him know what to do to support his wife.
"For You formed my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works, and my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;
And in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them."
(Psalms 139:13-16)
