Oxytocin is arguably the most important hormone in labor. This article reiterates this claim. She did leave out that the connection between turning down the lights and oxytocin production has to do with the hormone melatonin. Melatonin increases oxytocin and is produced during night when in the dark. Blue light actually inhibits the production of melatonin thus decreasing it’s beneficial support of elevated oxytocin production. If you are interested in reading more about the hormones that drive labor, you can check out my article here.
May is Preeclampsia Awareness Month. Most of us remember the horrific scene of Sybil’s death during childbirth on Downton Abbey. We like to think this was just one of the risks of having children years ago but the truth is that this remains the one of the main causes of perinatal maternal death. The good news is that the majority (60%) of these deaths were deemed preventable. This is good news because that means with education of care providers and women, this is a condition that can be recognized in time to protect the mother and baby. Steps have been taken since the original study showing the depressing statistics of perinatal deaths from preeclampsia. In a year since implementing the new measures, they have seen a significant reduction in the number of preeclampsia deaths. This is wonderful news but does show the need of education among women and care providers.
There seems to be a very common misconception about doulas among the general public. I have heard many people describe or ask for a doula to be their advocate, to speak to the medical staff on behalf of them. I understand being concerned about possibly having to argue with medical staff and worried that you may not understand some of what they say. My personality is not the type to react well to having to stand up for myself. I totally understand. Add the fact that you will be in labor and not want to take the time to break from your rhythm to have to argue with someone about your birth plan can be even more stressful. However, this is not part of the role of a doula.
As a doula, I am allowed into the hospital or birthing center as your guest. The staff is legally not allowed to discuss any part of your medical care with me and the hospital staff can ask me to leave the hospital if they feel that I am impeding medical care.
As a doula, I am here to empower you. I can help you understand the medical jargon and procedures, I can help you research evidence-based medical practices, I can help you think of questions to ask, and I will support you and validate your feelings no matter what happens.
Let’s Do Denton Life
I walked in a 5K on Saturday to benefit Woman to Woman Pregnancy Resource Center in Denton. There was a great turn out and the weather was amazing. I was actually signed up to walk the 1K but accidentally ended up in the 5K group. Ha! If you would like to see pictures of the day, you can check out my Facebook album.
